Giglio with Giannutri Option from Castiglione and Talamone

Only Giglio or Giglio and Giannutri?

Discover the experience

The excursion

Departure from Castiglione della Pescaia or Talamone for a day in the Tuscan Archipelago, with navigation along the coast to Talamone and subsequent boarding towards Giglio Island. After arriving at Giglio Porto, free time can be organized differently depending on the chosen formula: you can dedicate the entire stop to Giglio or also visit Giannutri, with a shorter stay on both islands. The Giglio-only formula includes about 6 hours on the island and allows greater freedom to alternate between sea, villages, and walks. You can stay at Giglio Porto, the main landing point of the island, or move independently towards Giglio Castello or Giglio Campese. With the Giglio and Giannutri option, the stop at Giglio lasts about 3 hours and 10 minutes, followed by a navigation of about 45 minutes and about 1 hour and 30 minutes at Giannutri: this is the right choice if you prefer to experience two different environments in the same day, but giving up exploring Giglio more leisurely. The navigation then leads from the eastern coast of Giglio towards the southernmost island of the Tuscan Archipelago. At Giannutri the landscape changes: the coast is rocky and jagged, the Mediterranean scrub grows among the limestone outcrops, and stops are mainly concentrated near the landing areas. The available time allows you to choose between a walk, a moment at the sea in permitted areas, or participation in any guided tours organized on site.

How to choose the formula

Choosing only Giglio you can dedicate the day to a specific location or combine several aspects of the island, considering independent transfers. Giglio Porto is the most practical solution for those who want to stay close to the landing: the marina develops around a small inlet, with houses, businesses, and sea views. From here you can reach the beaches on the eastern coast, such as Cannelle and Caldane, or climb towards Giglio Castello. Cannelle beach is one of the most famous on the island and faces the eastern side; Caldane, smaller and located further south, is reachable by footpath or by sea. For both, it is necessary to evaluate on site the timing and mode of transfer. Giglio Castello, at about 400 meters altitude, is the ancient village of the island: it preserves walls, towers, alleys, arches, and stairways of the old fortified center. It is the best choice if you want to focus on history, architecture, and a panoramic walk instead of swimming. Campese is located on the western coast and faces the largest beach on the island, bordered by the coastal tower. If you stay all day on Giglio, you can consider reaching it during free time for a sea break; with the formula that includes Giannutri, the time on Giglio is more limited and it is better to focus on one area. Transfers between Giglio Porto, Castello, Campese, and the beaches are not included and must be organized independently, also checking in advance any public bus service.

The stop at Giannutri

Giannutri is a smaller and predominantly natural island, included in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. There are no roads for cars: between Cala dello Spalmatoio and Cala Maestra is the main connection accessible independently, while access to other paths or archaeological areas may be regulated and visits with authorized guides may be required. Cala dello Spalmatoio is one of the main landing points and offers a setting suitable for a short sea break, with clear waters and rocky landscape. At Cala Maestra are the remains of a Roman villa, while near Cala dello Spalmatoio are recognizable traces of the ancient Roman port. The visit to archaeological sites is not automatically included in the stop: with the available time it is therefore advisable to choose in advance whether to dedicate yourself to walking, landscape, and sea or to check the possibility of participating in a guided tour organized on the island.
