Visits to Montecristo Island 2025

Montecristo Island is a unique and extraordinary place, shrouded in an aura of mystery and fascination. It is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and is considered one of the most protected and unspoilt islands in the Mediterranean.

Why is Montecristo Island protected?

Montecristo has been a strict nature reserve since 1971, where ecosystem protection is the top priority. Access is strictly regulated in order to preserve the delicate balance of its flora and fauna.

  • Flora: the island is covered in lush Mediterranean scrub, including rare species such as Phoenician juniper and sea rockrose.
  • Fauna: Montecristo is a refuge for numerous animal species, including the yellow-legged gull, the peregrine falcon and endemic species such as the Sardinian painted frog, a rare amphibian.
  • Introduced species: over the years, mouflon have been reintroduced and now roam freely on the island, adding to the appeal of this unique ecosystem.

History and curiosities

Montecristo is not only a natural paradise, but also an island rich in history and legends:

  • The island was already known to the ancient Romans and is mentioned in ancient documents as “Oglasa”.
  • Its current name derives from the monks who settled there in the Middle Ages and built the hermitage of San Mamiliano.
  • The island’s fame grew with Alexandre Dumas’ novel “The Count of Monte Cristo”, which made it famous throughout the world as the setting of Edmond Dantès’ legendary treasure.
