Isola del Giglio – An island for dogs

Isola del Giglio is a welcoming destination for our four-legged friends, despite the ban on dogs bathing in the sea. In fact, many private beach establishments allow dogs to enter, although they are not permitted in the water during daylight hours.

The island offers numerous coves and beautiful nature trails, ideal for walking with your pets and allowing them to explore the surrounding landscape or take a dip from the rocks.

As stipulated by local regulations, it is important to keep dogs on a leash (and use a muzzle on the scheduled bus, as required by regional regulations), in order to respect other tourists and ensure the animals’ safety. It is also essential to always carry the necessary supplies for cleaning up after your pets.

FAQ about dogs and pets on Isola del Giglio

Can pets be taken on the mini-cruise vessels? Yes, pets are allowed on our vessels, provided they are kept on a leash. On the vessel departing from Porto Santo Stefano, they require a €5.00 ticket. On vessels departing from Castiglione della Pescaia and Talamone, access is free of charge.

Can I take my dog to the beach? Access to Isola del Giglio’s free beaches is regulated as follows: on the four main beaches (Campese, Cannelle, Arenella and Caldane), dogs are not allowed on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year. From 15 June to 15 September, during the bathing season, access is prohibited from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. However, many beach establishments are dog-friendly and allow dogs within the beach area, although they are still not permitted to enter the water.

Are there beaches dedicated to dogs? No, during the summer there are no “dog beaches” or sections of free beach dedicated to animals. However, outside the four main beaches, dogs may freely access the rocks and coves, where they can swim at any time of day.

Can I go hiking with my dog? All the trails on Isola del Giglio can be walked with your dog, but it is compulsory to keep it on a leash, both to avoid disturbing wildlife and to prevent dangerous encounters, such as with vipers. Owners are also required to clean up after their pets, so it is essential to carry a cleanup kit.

Is there a vet on the island? There are no veterinary services on Isola del Giglio. In an emergency, you can contact the nearest veterinary facilities in Orbetello (Ambulatorio La Fenice, Tel.: +39 0564 386855) or Albinia (Clinica Veterinaria Costa d'Argento, available 24 hours a day, Tel.: +39 0564 865534).
